Mark Zuckerberg, through Meta, the parent company of Facebook has donated $1 million to the Donald Trump Inaugural Fund.
What is notable about this donation is that Zuckerberg did not make any such donation to Trump’s 2017 inauguration. Nor did he contribute a dime for President Biden’s inauguration.
So the obvious question is, what makes the 2nd term of Donald Trump so compelling that Zuckerberg feels compelled to donate $1 million? Could it be that he is bending the knee? Could it be that he is kissing the backside of a man who has promised to rule as an authoritarian? In his own words, a dictator starting on day one?
In countries with authoritarian leaders, those who fall in line are often spared from being made targets of the regime. Those who give bribes and kickbacks to the Dear Leader are allowed to continue doing business. Those who do not, often find themselves the target of the authoritarian’s wrath. They are investigated. Their business taken over by the regime, or shut down altogether.
Could Zuckerberg be donating this money to stay on Trump’s good side, lest he and his company find themselves the target of government persecution? We don’t know for sure, but it certainly seems to be the most logical explanation.
